Parental Tips

If your child has Autism, anxiety, or sensory issues, we suggest reading the “What to Expect When Getting New Glasses” story to prepare them in advance! The story goes through each step of the process and may help your child feel less anxious when they know what to expect! You may want to review anything you think may be especially hard for them such as potential sensory issues, or getting fixated on a pair of glasses that don’t fit them, for example. You may also want to let them know they can help pick out the glasses, but you have the final say on which pair you are buying! Remind them that the glasses have to fit them and be comfortable!

Once glass frames and lenses have been selected, the glasses can be made in one hour. It may be helpful to decide in advance if you’ll wait for them, leave the store and do a different activity for an hour, or come back another day for pick up, and let your child know in advance what the plan is and when they will get to take their new glasses home!

Although the process does not take long to pick glasses and lenses, there may be times when you need to talk to the staff about paperwork and lens choices. Bring an activity from home or a favorite toy, or if your child has an electronic device or handheld game, bring it charged so they can play for a few minutes. If your child needs a lot of supervision, you may want to bring a second caretaker or helper!

Glasses:
Metal frames are much more adjustable than plastic ones. On metal frames the nose pads can be moved and adjusted, while on the plastic frames, there is no way to adjust the nose bridge. When you and your child pick up the glasses, the staff can make minor adjustments to make the glasses more comfortable.

Lenses:
There are choices of lenses, and the Basic Trivex, Think, and Ultra Thin are the best option for active kids and teens as they are shatter resistant. The polycarbonate Basic “Thin” lenses are included in the Back-To-School deal and highly recommended for active kids! The Basic CR39 Plastic is not recommended as they may shatter.

Good News!
Have a very active kid who breaks things frequently? Eyemart has a great frame replacement policy included with your purchase! Bring in any part of the broken glasses and they will replace the frame at no cost!

Please let the staff know if there’s anything they can do to make the store more sensory-friendly, such as turning down the music volume, or dimming the lights if possible. If your loved one is having a hard time and you haven’t completed the process, it’s ok to come back! Take a photo of the glasses and try again another day!
